Dental Crowns & Bridges in Oakville
From a cracked molar to a gap where a tooth used to be, dental crowns Oakville families rely on can rebuild a damaged tooth, and bridges can fill in a missing one. New patients are always welcome at Royal Oak Dental, and your first consultation is free.
Restoring teeth that are broken, worn, or missing
A crown is a custom-made cap that fits snugly over a tooth, covering it completely to restore its shape, size, and strength. People often call it a “cap” for exactly that reason. It’s a common choice when a tooth is cracked, badly worn down, weakened by a large filling, or has just had root canal treatment.
A bridge does something different — it replaces one or more teeth that are already gone. It works by anchoring to the healthy teeth on either side of the gap, which support a replacement tooth (or teeth) that fills the space in between. Both options are designed to look natural and let you bite, chew, and smile with confidence again.
What a crown and a bridge actually do
A crown wraps around the whole visible part of a single tooth, protecting what’s left and holding it together so it can handle everyday chewing. A bridge is built from one or more replacement teeth, called pontics, held in place by crowns on the natural teeth next to the gap — these supporting teeth are known as abutments. Once it’s cemented in place, a bridge is fixed, so it doesn’t come out the way a partial denture does.
Crown, bridge, or something else?
The simplest way to tell the two apart: a crown rebuilds a tooth you still have, while a bridge replaces a tooth you’ve lost. A crown or bridge may be a good fit if:
- You have a cracked or broken tooth — a crown can hold it together and protect it from further damage.
- A tooth has a very large filling — when not much natural tooth is left, a crown gives it the strength a filling can’t.
- You’ve had a root canal — treated teeth can become brittle, and a crown helps shield them from fracturing.
- Your teeth are worn down — from grinding or years of wear, crowns can restore their height and shape.
- You’re missing one to a few teeth in a row — a bridge can fill the gap if the neighbouring teeth are healthy enough to support it.
- You want a fixed replacement — a bridge stays put and doesn’t need to be removed for cleaning the way a denture does.
Not everyone is a candidate, and that’s okay — a tooth that’s too damaged may need to be addressed first, and a dental implant is sometimes a better way to replace a missing tooth than a bridge. The honest first step is a simple exam. Your dentist at Royal Oak Dental will look at the tooth, talk through your options, and help you choose what makes sense for your situation.

What to expect at your appointments
- Exam and plan We start by examining the tooth, sometimes with an X-ray, and talking through whether a crown, a bridge, or another option fits best. There’s no pressure to decide on the spot.
- Preparing the tooth The area is fully numbed first. For a crown, a thin layer of the tooth is gently reshaped so the cap can fit over it; for a bridge, the supporting teeth on either side are shaped the same way.
- Impressions We take a precise impression or digital scan of the tooth and your bite. This is sent to a dental lab so your crown or bridge is made to fit you exactly and match your other teeth.
- A temporary while you wait In most cases you’ll leave with a temporary crown or bridge protecting the tooth while the permanent one is being made — usually over a couple of weeks.
- Fitting the final restoration At your next visit, the permanent crown or bridge is checked for fit, colour, and comfort, then bonded or cemented into place. Small adjustments to your bite are made so it feels natural.
Crown & bridge materials
Crowns and bridges can be made from a few different materials, and the right one depends on the tooth’s location and how much it needs to take on. All-porcelain and all-ceramic restorations give the most natural, tooth-coloured look and are often chosen for front teeth that show when you smile. Porcelain-fused-to-metal combines a metal base for strength with a porcelain surface for a natural appearance. Zirconia is prized for being very strong while still looking tooth-coloured, which makes it a popular choice for molars that do the heavy chewing. Your dentist will help you weigh appearance, strength, and budget to land on the best fit.
Cost & insurance
What you pay for a crown or bridge depends on the material, the tooth involved, and any extra work the tooth needs first. In Ontario, a single crown commonly falls somewhere in the range of roughly $900 to $1,500, and bridges cost more because they involve more than one tooth, plus a lab fee. Many dental insurance plans cover a portion of crowns and bridges — often around half — though coverage varies, so it’s worth checking your plan. We’re happy to give you a clear estimate before any treatment begins and to help you understand what your benefits cover.

With good care, a crown often lasts around 10 to 15 years, and many last longer. Bridges have a similar lifespan, commonly in the range of 5 to 15 years. How long yours lasts comes down to daily brushing and flossing, regular checkups, and not using your teeth to chew very hard items.
The procedure itself shouldn’t be painful. Your dentist numbs the area completely first, so you may feel some pressure but not pain. It’s common to have mild sensitivity to hot or cold for a few days afterward, which usually settles on its own.
A traditional crown or bridge usually takes two visits — one to prepare the tooth and take impressions, and another to fit the final restoration once the lab has made it. Some practices offer same-day crowns made with in-office technology; ask us whether that’s a fit for your situation.
Treat them much like your natural teeth: brush twice a day and floss daily. With a bridge, cleaning underneath the replacement tooth matters, so we’ll show you how to use a floss threader or a small interdental brush. Regular checkups help us catch any issues early.
A bridge relies on the neighbouring teeth for support, so it isn’t always the best choice. A dental implant replaces a missing tooth on its own without involving the teeth next to it, and is sometimes a better long-term option. We’ll talk through the pros and cons of each so you can decide with full information.
In the Oakville area, a single crown typically falls in the range of roughly $900 to $1,500, depending on the material and the tooth. Bridges cost more since they replace one or more teeth and involve a lab fee. Many insurance plans cover part of the cost, and we’ll give you a clear estimate before you commit to anything.
