Emergency dentistry at Royal Oak Dental in Oakville, Ontario
Overview

When something hurts, we want to hear from you.

A toothache that keeps you up at night, a tooth knocked loose on the soccer pitch, or sudden swelling along your jaw — these moments feel urgent because they are. The sooner you reach a dentist, the more comfortable you’ll be and the more options we usually have to save a tooth or stop an infection from spreading.

At Royal Oak Dental on Ford Drive, we care for families across Oakville and Mississauga, and we treat dental emergencies with calm, unhurried attention. Whatever has happened, call us first — we’ll talk you through the next few minutes and arrange care as fast as we can.

How we help

Steady, same-day care when it matters most.

When you call, we ask a few gentle questions to understand what’s wrong and how much pain you’re in, then offer the soonest appointment we have — often same-day. In the chair, your dentist focuses first on relieving your pain and addressing the immediate problem, whether that means easing an infection, securing a loose or broken tooth, or replacing a lost filling. Once you’re comfortable, we’ll explain what happened and walk through any follow-up care, so you always know what comes next.

When to seek emergency care

Signs it’s time to call right away.

Not sure whether your situation counts as an emergency? If you’re in real pain or worried, it’s always worth a call. These are some of the most common reasons people reach out to us:

  • Severe or lasting toothache — pain that won’t settle, throbs, or wakes you at night often points to infection or decay that needs prompt attention.
  • A knocked-out tooth — a permanent tooth that’s been fully knocked out is a true emergency; keep it moist and call us within the hour for the best chance of saving it.
  • A broken, chipped, or cracked tooth — especially if there are sharp edges, bleeding, or pain when you bite or breathe in cold air.
  • A lost filling or crown — the exposed tooth can feel sensitive or sharp, and a quick repair helps protect it from further damage.
  • Swelling or a dental abscess — a swollen area, gum boil, or facial puffiness can signal infection that shouldn’t wait.
  • Bleeding that won’t stop — ongoing bleeding from the mouth after an injury or procedure needs to be checked.
  • Something stuck between teeth — if gentle flossing won’t free it, we can help so you don’t damage the tooth or gum.

When in doubt, just call — we’d rather hear from you and put your mind at ease. Please note that some situations need a hospital first: if you have difficulty breathing or swallowing, swelling spreading toward your eye or throat, a high fever, or uncontrolled bleeding — or any serious facial trauma — go to your nearest emergency room or call 911 right away.

What to do now

Simple steps while you reach us.

  1. Call us first Phone (905) 339-1001 and tell us what’s happening. We’ll guide you through the next steps and book the soonest visit available, often the same day.
  2. Ease the pain gently Rinse with warm water and take an over-the-counter pain reliever such as acetaminophen or ibuprofen if it’s safe for you. Never place aspirin directly on the gum — it can burn the tissue.
  3. Calm swelling Hold a cold compress against your cheek for short spells to reduce swelling and soothe discomfort. For a sore, swollen gum, a warm salt-water rinse can also help.
  4. Protect a knocked-out tooth Pick it up by the crown — not the root — and rinse it briefly if dirty. If you can, slip it gently back into the socket; otherwise keep it in milk or tucked in your cheek, and head straight to us.
  5. Save any pieces If a tooth, filling, or crown has broken, keep the pieces in a clean container and bring them with you. They can sometimes help with the repair.
  6. Come in and let us help Once you arrive, your dentist takes over — relieving your pain, treating the cause, and explaining everything in plain language so you feel at ease.
Same-day appointments

We make room for urgent visits.

Emergencies rarely come at a convenient time, so we hold space in our daily schedule for patients who need to be seen quickly. When you call, let us know it’s urgent and we’ll do our best to fit you in the same day. New patients are always welcome, and you don’t need to have visited us before to be cared for in an emergency.

Cost & insurance

Clear answers before we begin.

The cost of emergency care depends on what’s needed, and we’ll always talk it through with you before starting any treatment — no surprises. We offer free consultations, accept most dental insurance plans, and are happy to submit claims on your behalf. If you have questions about coverage or payment, just ask; we want care to feel accessible when you need it.

Frequently asked questions

Questions are always welcome.

In most cases, yes. We keep time open each day for urgent visits, so when you call we’ll offer the soonest appointment we have — frequently the same day. Let us know how much pain you’re in so we can prioritise your care.

Act quickly and call us right away. Pick the tooth up by the crown (the part you normally see), not the root, and rinse it briefly if it’s dirty — don’t scrub it. If you’re able, place it gently back in the socket; if not, keep it moist in a cup of milk or held between your cheek and gum. Getting to a dentist within about 30 to 60 minutes gives the best chance of saving it.

Call our office and follow the instructions on our message for urgent situations. If you have severe swelling, trouble breathing or swallowing, a high fever, or bleeding that won’t stop, please go to your nearest hospital emergency room or call 911 — then follow up with us as soon as you can.

It depends on what’s needed to make you comfortable and treat the problem. We’ll always review the cost with you before we begin, offer free consultations, and accept most insurance plans. If cost is a worry, please tell us — we’ll help you find a way forward.

A toothache that is severe, lasting, or keeps you awake often signals infection or decay that needs prompt care, so it’s worth calling. While you reach us, a warm-water rinse and an over-the-counter pain reliever can help — but avoid placing aspirin directly on the gum.

For most dental problems — toothaches, broken or knocked-out teeth, lost fillings, and minor swelling — an emergency dentist in Oakville is the right place, and we can usually see you the same day. Go to a hospital first if you have difficulty breathing or swallowing, swelling spreading to your eye or throat, a high fever, uncontrolled bleeding, or serious facial trauma.

Absolutely. You don’t need to be an existing patient for us to help in an emergency — new patients are always welcome at Royal Oak Dental. Just give us a call and we’ll take care of the rest.
