Sleep apnea and snoring appliances at Royal Oak Dental in Oakville, Ontario
Overview

A quieter night that fits in your pocket

Loud snoring and disrupted sleep are common, and they can affect the whole household. For many people, the cause is a narrowing of the airway during sleep — the soft tissues at the back of the throat relax and partly block the flow of air. A custom-fitted oral appliance is a small, comfortable device you wear at night to help keep that airway open.

These appliances are a well-established treatment option for snoring and for mild-to-moderate obstructive sleep apnea, and they are often a good fit for people who have struggled to get along with a CPAP machine. Because the device is quiet and easy to pack, it travels well too. Your dentist at Royal Oak Dental will talk you through whether it suits your situation and how it works alongside your doctor’s care.

How it works

Gentle support for an open airway

The most common type of dental sleep appliance is a mandibular advancement device. It looks a little like a sports mouthguard and fits snugly over your upper and lower teeth. While you sleep, it holds your lower jaw — and with it, your tongue — in a slightly forward position. That small shift helps create more room at the back of your throat, so the airway is less likely to collapse and vibrate, which is what produces the sound of snoring.

Each appliance is custom-made from impressions or scans of your teeth, and many designs can be finely adjusted over several visits so the fit and the amount of advancement feel right for you.

Is an oral appliance right for you?

Signs an appliance may be worth discussing

An oral appliance is not the answer for everyone, but it helps a great many people sleep — and breathe — more easily. It may be a good option if you recognise yourself in any of the following:

  • You snore loudly or regularly — enough to disturb your own rest or your partner’s.
  • You have been diagnosed with mild-to-moderate obstructive sleep apnea — an appliance is a recognised first-line treatment in these cases.
  • You cannot tolerate CPAP — the mask, the noise or the airflow keep you from using it consistently.
  • You travel often — a compact, power-free device is far easier to carry than a machine.
  • You prefer a quieter option — oral appliances make no sound at all while you sleep.
  • You want something simple to live with — many people find a small mouthpiece easier to get used to than a mask.

One honest note: obstructive sleep apnea is a medical condition that needs to be diagnosed by a physician, usually with a sleep study. We do not diagnose sleep apnea ourselves, and an appliance is a treatment option rather than a cure. If you have not yet been assessed, we will gladly help point you toward a sleep physician, and we work in coordination with your doctor throughout. For some people — particularly those with severe sleep apnea — CPAP remains the more suitable choice, and your physician can advise on what is right for you.

Step by step

What to expect, from first visit to follow-up

  1. A relaxed first conversation We start with a free consultation to hear about your sleep, your snoring and anything your partner has noticed, and to look at whether an oral appliance might suit you.
  2. Diagnosis with your physician If you have not been assessed for sleep apnea, we will help you connect with a sleep physician for a sleep study. A confirmed diagnosis guides the right treatment.
  3. Impressions and a custom fit Once an appliance is the agreed plan, we take precise scans or impressions of your teeth so your device is built to fit your mouth comfortably.
  4. Fitting and fine-tuning When your appliance is ready, we fit it, show you how to wear and care for it, and make small adjustments so it feels right. It is normal to take a couple of weeks to settle in.
  5. Follow-up and review We check in to see how you and your sleep are doing, adjust the appliance if needed and keep your doctor in the loop so your care stays joined up.
Oral appliance vs CPAP

How does it compare with a CPAP machine?

CPAP, which gently pushes air through a mask to hold the airway open, is highly effective and remains the standard for severe sleep apnea. An oral appliance works differently — it repositions the jaw rather than using airflow — and is most often recommended for snoring and mild-to-moderate sleep apnea, or for people who simply cannot get comfortable with CPAP. The best appliance is the one you will actually wear every night, so for many people a small, silent, easy-to-pack device makes consistent treatment far more realistic. Your physician’s diagnosis helps determine which approach fits you best.

Getting diagnosed

Why a diagnosis comes first

Snoring and sleep apnea are not the same thing — many people snore without having apnea, while others have apnea with little snoring. Because untreated obstructive sleep apnea can affect your health, it should be evaluated by a physician, usually through a sleep study done at home or in a clinic. That assessment confirms whether you have apnea and how significant it is, which in turn shows whether an oral appliance is an appropriate treatment for you. We are happy to help you take that first step and to work alongside your doctor from there.

Frequently asked questions

Questions are always welcome.

It fits over your teeth like a mouthguard and gently holds your lower jaw forward while you sleep. That position helps keep the airway at the back of your throat open, which reduces the vibration that causes snoring and supports easier breathing.

For snoring and mild-to-moderate obstructive sleep apnea, it can be. It is also a helpful option for people who cannot tolerate CPAP. For severe sleep apnea, CPAP is often still the better choice — your physician’s diagnosis helps guide that decision, and we are glad to discuss it with you.

If you may have sleep apnea, yes. It is a medical condition that a physician needs to diagnose, usually through a sleep study. We do not diagnose it ourselves, but we can help you connect with a sleep physician and then coordinate your appliance with your doctor’s guidance.

No. Snoring is the sound of vibrating airway tissue and can happen on its own, while sleep apnea involves repeated pauses in breathing during sleep. Snoring can be a sign of apnea, which is one reason a proper assessment is worthwhile.

Most people adjust within a couple of weeks. Because the device is custom-made for your mouth and can be fine-tuned over a few visits, it is designed to feel comfortable. Mild jaw or tooth tenderness early on is common and usually settles, and we adjust the fit as needed.

It often is when it is prescribed to treat diagnosed obstructive sleep apnea, though coverage varies from plan to plan. We are happy to walk through the details with you and help you understand your options before you commit to anything.
