Root Canal Treatment in Oakville
If a tooth is badly decayed, infected, or causing you a deep ache, a root canal in Oakville can settle the problem and save your natural tooth. New patients are always welcome at Royal Oak Dental, and your first consultation is free.
A gentle way to save your natural tooth
Inside every tooth, beneath the hard outer enamel, is a soft centre called the pulp — a small bundle of nerves and blood vessels. When deep decay, a crack, or a long-standing infection reaches that pulp, it can become inflamed or abscessed, and the result is often pain, swelling, or sensitivity that doesn’t let up.
A root canal treats the problem from the inside out. Your dentist gently removes the damaged pulp, cleans and disinfects the space, then seals the tooth so it can stay in place and keep doing its job. Rather than losing the tooth, you get to keep it — roots and all.
What actually happens during a root canal
After numbing the area so you stay comfortable, your dentist makes a small opening in the top of the tooth to reach the inflamed or infected pulp. Using fine instruments, the inner canals are carefully cleaned, shaped, and disinfected to clear away bacteria. The hollow space is then filled with a soft, rubber-like material called gutta-percha and sealed. In many cases a crown is added later to protect and strengthen the tooth for everyday chewing.
When a root canal makes sense
A root canal is usually the right choice when the inside of a tooth is damaged but the tooth itself can still be saved. Your dentist may recommend one if you have:
- Deep decay — a cavity that has reached the pulp and can no longer be fixed with a simple filling.
- An infection or abscess — bacteria inside the tooth, sometimes with a small bump or pimple on the gum.
- A cracked or chipped tooth — an injury that has exposed or damaged the nerve.
- Lingering pain — an ache that keeps returning, or sharp pain when you bite down.
- Ongoing sensitivity — discomfort with hot or cold that lasts long after the food or drink is gone.
- A tooth that’s worth keeping — enough healthy structure remains to support the tooth after treatment.
If the tooth is too damaged to save, removal followed by an implant or bridge may be the better path. The honest first step is simple — come in for a free consultation, and your dentist at Royal Oak Dental will examine the tooth, take an X-ray, and walk you through every option before anything is decided.

Your visit, from start to finish
- Exam & X-ray We look closely at the tooth and take an X-ray to confirm what’s going on and whether a root canal is the right answer.
- Comfortable numbing The area is fully numbed before we begin, so the treatment itself feels much like having a routine filling.
- Clean & disinfect A small opening lets us remove the damaged pulp, then clean and disinfect the inner canals to clear the infection.
- Fill & seal The cleaned space is filled with gutta-percha and sealed to keep bacteria out, with a temporary filling placed on top.
- Protect with a crown Once the tooth has settled, we often add a crown — especially on back teeth — to restore full strength for chewing.
Signs you may need a root canal
It’s not always obvious, but a few signs are worth paying attention to. The most common is a lingering toothache — pain that keeps coming back or flares when you bite. Many people also notice sensitivity to hot or cold that hangs around long after eating, swelling or tenderness in the gums near the tooth (sometimes with a small bump), or a tooth that is gradually darkening compared with its neighbours. If any of these sound familiar, it’s worth having it checked — catching it early often keeps treatment simpler.
Cost & insurance
The cost of a root canal in Oakville depends on which tooth is involved — front teeth have a single canal and are usually more straightforward, while molars at the back have several canals and take more time. In Ontario, a root canal commonly falls somewhere in the range of a few hundred to roughly two thousand dollars, and a protective crown afterward is a separate cost. Most dental insurance plans in Ontario cover a meaningful share of root canal treatment, and many patients are now eligible through the Canada Dental Care Plan. We’re glad to review your coverage, give you a clear written estimate before you commit, and help you make the most of your benefits.

Questions are always welcome.
This is the question we hear most — and the old reputation isn’t deserved. With modern numbing, the procedure itself feels much like a routine filling. The real pain usually comes from the infected tooth beforehand, and a root canal is what relieves it. Most people feel noticeably better afterward.
Many root canals are completed in a single appointment of about an hour to an hour and a half. Some teeth, especially molars with several canals or a stubborn infection, may need a second visit. We’ll let you know what to expect after your exam.
Often, yes — especially for back teeth that do a lot of chewing. A crown protects the treated tooth and restores its strength. Front teeth can sometimes be restored with a filling instead. Your dentist will recommend whatever gives the tooth the best long-term result.
The main alternative is removing the tooth, which usually means replacing it with an implant or bridge to fill the gap. Saving your natural tooth with a root canal is often the simpler and more affordable path, but we’ll walk you through both so you can choose with confidence.
With good care, a tooth treated with a root canal can last many years — often a decade or more, and frequently a lifetime. Keeping up with regular brushing, flossing, and check-ups gives it the best chance to stay healthy.
It depends on the tooth and its number of canals, with molars generally costing more than front teeth, and a crown is a separate cost where one is needed. Most Ontario insurance plans cover a good portion, and the Canada Dental Care Plan may apply too. We’ll give you a clear estimate before you decide.
