Porcelain veneers and smile makeovers at Royal Oak Dental in Oakville, Ontario
Overview

A natural-looking way to renew your smile

Porcelain veneers are thin, custom-made shells of dental porcelain that are bonded to the front of your teeth. They can soften the look of stains that don’t respond to whitening, even out chips and worn edges, close small gaps and bring more balance to a smile — all while keeping the result looking like your own teeth, just refreshed.

A smile makeover is simply a personalised plan rather than a single treatment. After listening to what bothers you and examining your teeth and gums, your dentist at Royal Oak Dental may suggest veneers on their own, or a combination of veneers, professional whitening and tooth-coloured bonding to reach the result you have in mind. Everything is planned around your face, your bite and your goals.

How it works

How porcelain veneers work

Porcelain mimics the way natural enamel catches the light, which is what helps veneers look so lifelike. To make room for a veneer, your dentist removes a very thin layer of enamel — usually around half a millimetre, less than the thickness of a fingernail. An impression or digital scan is sent to a dental lab, where each veneer is crafted to suit your teeth. At a later visit the surface is cleaned and lightly etched, then the veneer is set in place with a special bonding cement and cured with a focused light so it holds firmly.

Is it right for you?

Are porcelain veneers right for you?

Veneers tend to suit people who are mostly happy with their teeth but want to address a few cosmetic details. You may be a good candidate if you recognise some of the following:

  • Healthy teeth and gums — veneers work best on a clean, healthy foundation, so any decay or gum issues are treated first.
  • Stubborn discolouration — stains or a dull shade that whitening alone hasn’t improved.
  • Chips or worn edges — small fractures or edges that have flattened over time.
  • Minor gaps or uneven shapes — little spaces or slightly irregular teeth you’d like to even out.
  • Enough healthy enamel — a thin layer of enamel is needed for the veneer to bond reliably.
  • A steady bite and grinding under control — if you clench or grind, a nightguard can help protect your investment.
  • Realistic, positive expectations — you want a refreshed, natural look rather than a dramatic change.

If veneers aren’t the right fit, that’s completely okay — whitening, bonding or orthodontics may suit you better, and severely damaged teeth are often better served by a crown. The most helpful first step is a check-up and conversation so your dentist can recommend what genuinely makes sense for your teeth.

Step by step

What to expect, step by step

  1. Free consultation We start by listening to what you’d like to change, examining your teeth and gums, and talking honestly about whether veneers or a wider smile makeover is the right path.
  2. Planning your smile Together we map out the shade, shape and number of teeth involved. Photos, scans or a preview model help you picture the result before anything begins.
  3. Gentle preparation A very thin layer of enamel is shaped on the teeth receiving veneers, and an impression or digital scan is taken for the lab. Temporary veneers can be placed while yours are made.
  4. Fitting your veneers At your next visit we check the fit and colour with you, then bond each veneer in place and cure it with a special light for a secure, comfortable result.
  5. Final touches & care We refine your bite, polish the edges and review simple care tips so your new smile feels natural and stays looking its best.
Veneers vs bonding vs crowns

Veneers, bonding or a crown?

These three options sit on a spectrum. Tooth-coloured bonding is the most conservative and budget-friendly choice, ideal for small chips and quick touch-ups, though it can stain and chip more easily over time. Porcelain veneers sit in the middle: they cover the front of the tooth, resist staining well and tend to look very natural, while preserving most of your tooth. A crown covers the whole tooth and is usually the better choice when a tooth is heavily filled, cracked or significantly damaged and needs added strength. During your visit your dentist will explain which approach suits each tooth so you can decide with confidence.

Cost & insurance

Cost & insurance, explained simply

Because veneers and smile makeovers are usually chosen for cosmetic reasons, most dental insurance plans in Ontario do not cover them — though coverage is sometimes possible when a veneer is part of repairing a tooth after trauma or a developmental condition. The investment varies with the number of teeth and the complexity of your plan, so the clearest way to understand your options, and any financing available, is a no-obligation consultation where we’ll provide a written estimate before you commit to anything.

Frequently asked questions

Questions are always welcome.

To place a traditional porcelain veneer, your dentist gently removes a very thin layer of enamel — usually about half a millimetre — so the veneer fits flush and looks natural. Because that enamel doesn’t grow back, this step is considered permanent, which means a tooth with a veneer will generally need a veneer or similar restoration in the future. We’ll always talk through this with you before starting, and in some cases more conservative options may be possible.

With good care, porcelain veneers commonly last around 10 to 15 years, and many people enjoy them even longer. Brushing twice a day, flossing, keeping up with regular cleanings and wearing a nightguard if you grind your teeth all help them last. Avoiding habits like biting your nails or chewing ice protects them too.

That’s the goal. Dental porcelain reflects light much like natural enamel, and each veneer is custom-made in shade and shape to suit your other teeth and your face. We plan the look with you in advance so the result feels like you — just a little brighter and more even.

Good candidates usually have healthy teeth and gums, enough enamel for bonding, and want to improve things like colour, small chips, worn edges or minor gaps. If you grind your teeth or have decay or gum concerns, those are addressed first. The best way to know is a quick examination and chat — your dentist will tell you honestly whether veneers are a good fit.

It depends on what you’d like to change. Professional whitening is often the simplest, most affordable option if your main concern is the shade of otherwise healthy, well-shaped teeth. Veneers are worth considering when whitening can’t reach the look you want — for example, with stubborn stains, chips, worn edges or gaps — or when you’d like to improve colour and shape together. We’re happy to compare both with you.

The cost depends on how many teeth are involved and the details of your plan, so it varies from person to person. Veneers are usually a cosmetic choice and typically aren’t covered by dental insurance. Rather than quote a one-size-fits-all figure, we prefer to examine your teeth, discuss your goals and give you a clear written estimate — along with any financing options — at your free consultation.

Not at all. A smile makeover is simply a tailored plan, and for some people that means whitening or bonding rather than veneers, or a combination of treatments. We’ll recommend the gentlest approach that achieves the result you’re hoping for.
